Interview Questions

Interview prep for the week

The best answers in recruiting sound like clear editorial judgment: headline first, implication second, financing angle third.

Weekly prep
01Credit

How would you explain why "Bond Traders Brace for New Gilts Selloff as Local Elections Loom" matters to a banker in under a minute?

This is the fastest way to practice turning headlines into a financing or valuation point of view.

How to frame it

Start with what happened, move to the affected stakeholders, and finish with what changes for multiples, capital raising, or deal timing.

02Valuation

Walk me through a DCF and explain why terminal value can quietly dominate the output.

Recruiting teams want to know that you understand what is driving a model, not just the steps on the page.

How to frame it

Anchor the answer around free cash flow, discount rate, and terminal value, then point out that terminal value can represent most of the total valuation and therefore deserves sensitivity testing.

03Current Events

How would you connect today’s macro tape to M&A timing for a board conversation?

This tests whether you can bridge headlines and capital allocation rather than discussing news in isolation.

How to frame it

Start with rates and risk appetite, then translate that into cost of capital, buyer confidence, and whether sponsors or strategics have the cleaner path to act.
